Development of a safety and verification concept for a repository for heat-generating radioactive waste in crystalline rock in Germany
Taking into account the legal requirements, a draft for a methodical approach to the safety assessment of repository systems in crystalline rock in Germany was developed. Three possible options for the safe containment of radioactive waste in crystalline rock were considered: disposal in "multiple ewG" (mewG), under an "overlying ewG" (üewG), and in a "modified KBS-3 concept" (mKBS-3). Generic geological site models were developed to reflect possible geological situations in Germany. These models formed the basis for the development of disposal concepts as well as backfilling and sealing concepts. The geological models also served as exemplary applications for the developed safety assessment methodology. A fundamental element of the system analysis is a specific FEP (Feature, Event, Process) catalog, which encompasses all essential repository components and processes, enabling a comprehensive system description. FEP catalogs were developed for all three disposal options. Due to the fractured nature of the crystalline host rock, a newly developed modeling concept is proposed, which combines the advantages of fracture representation in discrete fracture network (DFN) models with those of THM (Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical) continuum modeling on irregular computational grids. Based on the quantified integrity criteria, the exemplary application overall showed that the proposed modeling concept provides a good basis for further analyses. To assess safe containment, the requirements described in § 4 of the EndlSiAnfV (Regulation on Repository Safety Requirements) were specified as indicators and exemplarily applied to the three investigated repository systems.
