Development of technical concepts for the retrieval of repository containers containing heat-generating radioactive waste and spent fuel elements from a high-level radioactive waste repository in crystalline rock

During the operational phase of the repository, the principle of reversibility of decisions is ensured through the retrievability of waste. The KOREKT project (FKZ 02E11728) focused on developing technical concepts for the retrieval of high-level radioactive waste repository containers for current repository concepts in crystalline rock. Although a timeframe of several decades can be assumed for retrieval, a comparison shows that it requires less time for mining activities than for excavation and disposal. The greatest uncertainty arises from the challenging effort required for tunnel support and the retrieval process itself. For the concepts of "overlapping final repositories" and "multiple final repositories," the retrieval process follows the same approach as envisaged in comparable disposal concepts in salt and clay rock. In the modified KBS-3 concept, the application of known retrieval concepts from Scandinavia is complicated by the preference for a Ca-bentonite. Furthermore, the very time-consuming flushing process seems to violate § 13 (2) of the Endlagersicherheitsanforderungsverordnung: "The retrieval must be planned in such a way that the expected technical and temporal effort required does not disproportionately exceed that of disposal." Mechanical methods have been identified as an alternative.
