Review and assessment of the toolkit for safety evaluation of high-level radioactive waste repositories

Within this project, a new methodological approach to demonstrate the safety of repositories was developed and exemplarily implemented for a high-level radioactive waste (HAW) repository at the Gorleben site. Additionally, recommendations for further in-depth investigations were derived. The core of this approach lies in systematically demonstrating the safe containment of the stored waste, instead of the conventional consideration of a presumed release scenario as comprehensive. Thus, it fully acknowledges the inherent advantages of disposal in salt rock.
