Shaft closures for repositories for high-level radioactive waste: Concept development for shaft closures and testing of shaft closure functional elements

The project "Shaft Closure Concepts for Repositories" (ELSA) Phase 2 builds on the project ELSA - Phase 1 (FKZ 02E10921), through which important conclusions for the basic concept of future shaft closures in the Salinar and claystone with increased requirements could be derived. With the second phase, these results were continuously utilized and practically implemented through laboratory and semi-technical experiments. The focus was on the development of modular concepts for shaft closures in salt and claystone formations as site-independent basic concepts, testing of individual functional elements of shaft closures in the laboratory, in semi-technical experiments, and in situ, as well as numerical calculations on shaft closures with various objectives to improve process understanding.
