From September 23 to 27, 2024, BGE TECHNOLOGY GmbH (BGE TEC) welcomed a Chinese delegation for a weeklong scientific visit to Germany. The week aimed at enhancing collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of radioactive waste management. The visit, organised in coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and facilitated by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, featured a robust programme of presentations and underground site visits.

The delegation’s agenda included tours to the two major German facilities for low- and intermediate-level waste (LILW), i.e., the Morsleben repository and the construction site of the Konrad repository, as well as to the Asse II mine. These visits offered the delegation valuable insights into Germany’s technical approaches and regulatory frameworks for the safe disposal of radioactive waste.

The scientific visit began at BGE TEC’s headquarters in Peine, where introductory presentations set the stage for an engaging week of discussions and site tours. Experts from both Germany and China shared updates on the respective status of radioactive waste management in their countries, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities faced by each nation.

The delegation’s visits to the German repositories provided a first-hand view of the underground infrastructure used in the disposal of radioactive waste, demonstrating the rigorous planning, engineering, and operational oversight required to ensure long-term safety.

In addition to facilitating such international exchanges, BGE TEC plays a vital role in the consulting and training landscape of radioactive waste management. Our team provides comprehensive advisory services on technical concepts, operational planning, safety assessments, and legal frameworks, thus ensuring that our clients receive state-of-the-art guidance tailored to their specific needs.
